Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Transactional SMS
About Transactional SMS
Transactional SMS is used to send important, time-sensitive messages to your customers – like OTPs, payment alerts, order updates, and appointment reminders. It is not for advertising. Unlike promotional SMS, it can reach numbers on the DND list and can be sent at any time of day.
Transactional SMS is for essential messages like OTPs and alerts – it reaches DND numbers and can be sent 24/7. Promotional SMS is for offers and marketing – it cannot reach DND numbers and can only be sent between 9am and 9pm. Both types require DLT registration before use.
These are just the DLT portal’s terms for transactional SMS. When you register on the DLT portal, you will see your message category listed as Service Implicit or Service Inferred – both mean the same thing as transactional SMS. There is no difference in how the messages are sent or delivered.
Yes. Transactional SMS bypasses DND filters – legally. TRAI allows this because essential messages like OTPs and bank alerts must reach the customer regardless of their DND status.
OTP SMS is one type of transactional SMS. Transactional SMS also covers bank alerts, order confirmations, appointment reminders, school notifications, and more.
DLT & Compliance
Yes, it is mandatory. TRAI made DLT registration compulsory for all businesses sending SMS in India. Without it, your messages will simply not be delivered – telecom operators block unregistered traffic. You need to register your entity, Sender ID, and message templates on the DLT portal before you can send even a single SMS.
A Sender ID is the 6-character name that shows up as the sender on your SMS – for example, DIGMLS or HDFCBK. It tells your customer who the message is from. The Sender ID must match your company or app name in short form and needs to be registered on the DLT portal before you can send any SMS.
Your messages will not be delivered. Since 2021, TRAI has made DLT registration mandatory for all businesses sending SMS in India. Any message sent without a registered Sender ID and approved template will be blocked by the telecom operators.
There is no fixed limit on how many Sender IDs you can register. However, each Sender ID must relate to your company or app name – you cannot register random names. If you run multiple products or brands, you can register a separate Sender ID for each.
Yes. You can choose your own 6-character Sender ID as long as it represents your brand or company name. It has to be approved on the DLT portal – generic or unrelated names will be rejected. Once approved, your messages will show your brand name instead of a random number.
Delivery & Technical
Usually between 3 to 10 seconds for OTPs and transactional messages. However, delivery time can vary depending on the receiver’s network – some networks may take slightly longer during peak hours or in low signal areas.
Yes. Digimiles supports most Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, and more. Regional language SMS uses Unicode encoding – the character limit is 70 per message instead of the usual 160 for English text.
You can check delivery reports in three ways – through your Digimiles dashboard, by downloading manual reports, or via API callback if you are a developer. The API callback lets your system receive real-time delivery status automatically without logging in.
API & Integration
Yes. Digimiles provides a REST API for sending transactional SMS. You get access to clean API documentation, sample code, and support to get your integration working quickly. Most developers are live within 30 minutes to an hour.
The Digimiles API works with any programming language – PHP, Python, Java, Node.js, .NET, Ruby, and others. Since it is a standard REST API, any language that can make an HTTP request can integrate with it. We provide sample code to help you get started faster.
The standard throughput is 5,000 SMS per second. With Digimiles, this can go up to 10,000 SMS per second depending on your requirement.
Pricing & Account
Digimiles transactional SMS starts at ₹0.275 per SMS and goes as low as 13 paisa depending on the volume. The entry plan is 5,000 SMS for ₹1,375 plus GST. There is no setup fee and your credits never expire – you pay only for what you use.
Yes. Just get in touch with us and we will set up a free trial account for you. You can test delivery speed, check reports, and try the API before you buy anything.
